7 answers to the most common essential oil questions

May 31st, 2019 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Whether you’re a die-hard essential oil fan or just getting started, you probably have questions about essential oils you’re searching for answers to, like “Are essential oils safe for kids?” and “What’s a Vitality oil anyway?” and maybe even “What the heck are essential oils?”

Well, you came to the right place! We’re answering all these questions and more with this special FAQ blog post. You might even discover the answer to a question you didn’t even know you had!

1. I’m becoming EO-obsessed, and I want to know everything. For starters, what exactly is an essential oil?

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts obtained by careful steam distillation, cold pressing, or resin tapping. The resulting oils have a distinctive molecular profile that gives them specific aromas and properties. Essential oils have been used by people for thousands of years for everything from cosmetic and dietary purposes to spiritual and religious use. We believe that essential oils are the best of nature distilled, and they have the power to elevate, motivate, and inspire.

2. Tell me more about how they can enhance my life! How can I use them?

There are countless ways to use essential oils: in the kitchen or at the gym, diffusing them or applying them to the skin—the possibilities are endless. The most important thing to remember is that each oil is different. Always check individual labels to find out if an oil needs to be diluted before using it on the skin or ingesting it and how often it should be used. A great place to start is to experiment with your own custom essential oil diffuser blends to find the scents that speak to your soul. You can also check out other Young Living blog posts and YoungLiving.com for enough tips and tricks to keep you busy with oils.

3. Wait, diluted? Why do they need to be diluted?

Pure essential oils are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they are extracted. Some oils are considered gentle and generally safe to apply directly to the skin, like Lavender and Copaiba. Other oils are considered “hot” and should be diluted before they are applied to skin, like Cinnamon Bark and Oregano. This also goes for our line of Vitality™ oils. Always refer to individual oil labels for dilution instructions.

4. Ah, yes—Vitality essential oils! How are they different from regular essential oils?

Bottles of classic essential oils and the corresponding bottles of Vitality oils contain the same oils. However, Vitality oils are labeled for dietary use, and the classic essential oils are labeled for topical and aromatic use. The designation of the two products allows you to share all the ways to use essential oils in the correct way, in line with package directions.

5. If some oils are so powerful, are essential oils safe for kids?

Some oils are safe for kids and some are not. To make it easy for you, we created essential oil blends and essential oil-infused products specifically for kids and babies. Before using Young Living products with your little ones, carefully review the individual product label for full information on appropriate age usage and any cautions. Each child is different, so it’s always a good idea to test a small amount to make sure no irritation occurs before applying to a large area of skin. The same goes when diffusing essential oils around babies. Be sure to test them first! You should also be generous when it comes to dilution and remember to use less than you would for an adult. Some of our favorite essential oils for babies are Grapefruit, Lavender, and German Chamomile. Learn more about using essential oils on your little ones with our Essential Oils in the Nursery infographic.

6. Okay, so some essential oils are safe for babies, but are they safe to use during pregnancy?

Just like with babies, essential oils can be a great addition to your routine throughout pregnancy. Staying relaxed and pampering yourself during those 9 months keep you happy while the baby grows, kicks, and wiggles. Start slow with essential oils and diffuse in a large area to see how you tolerate them, then go from there. We always recommend that pregnant women consult with a trained health professional with experience using essential oils. For more info on essential oils an pregnancy, check out our guest post from Dr. Lindsey Elmore.

7. Essential oils just keep sounding better and better! Why Young Living though? What sets you apart?

Our standards for purity are unmatched. Because synthetics, contaminants, cheap fillers, and unethical production practices are not an option for our essential oils, we source our oils from our own farms and vetted suppliers and test extensively. If an essential oil doesn’t meet our strict testing requirements, it’s rejected and can’t be used in any Young Living product. It’s all part of our Seed to Seal® standard and our three pillars: Sourcing, Science, and Standards. For more information visit SeedtoSeal.com.

Beat the Bedtime Blahs: 7 Tips for a Better Night’s Sleep

May 17th, 2019 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

How you end the day makes all the difference. Your evening routine can either set you up for a cheerful and fulfilling day or one full of frustration and exhaustion. Here are seven steps you can take to create a successful bedtime routine that will give you more restful nights and more productive days.

1. Set an alarm for bedtime.

Try setting an alarm for one hour before you’d like to be settled in bed to remind you that it’s time to step out of your day and start winding down.

2. Drink up!

Since you end up going 6–8 hours without any liquid at all, drinking water throughout the day and before you hit the sack is essential to keeping yourself hydrated. Try adding Lavender Vitality™ essential oil to your water or herbal tea for a calming influence. Aim for an hour before bed, so you aren’t waking up in the middle of the night for a bathroom trip.

3. Give yourself a little face time.

Make sure to give your skin and teeth the TLC they need. Refresh and renew your face with a mild wash such as our ART® Gentle Cleanser. You should also use gentle products on your teeth that are free of synthetic dyes and fluoride such as our Thieves® AromaBright™ Toothpaste and Thieves Fresh Essence Mouthwash. Taking time to establish and follow this important hygiene ritual will help you feel fresh and relaxed before bed and can signal to your brain that it’s time to calm down.

4. Take notes for tomorrow.

Write down a brief game plan for a productive tomorrow. While creating your list, remember to envision the kind of day you’d like to have, how you’d like to feel, and the top priorities you’ve got in your sights. Get it down on paper and you won’t spend hours trying to fall asleep thinking about what your day might look like.

5. Set yourself up for success.

The night before, prepare your outfit, your breakfast and lunch, or complete other tasks you’d usually take care of in the morning. The fewer tasks looming over you, the quicker and happier you will be getting out of bed in the morning.

6. Ditch the tech and read a book.

The light from electronic screens can trick your mind and body into thinking it’s still light out. Try leaving technology out of your bedroom to help you shift into to a calm, relaxed, and clear state.

7. Add essential oils to your routine.

Try diffusing LavenderStress Away™, or your favorite blend of essential oils with comforting aromas as you prepare for bed. Rubbing a couple drops between your palms and brushing them over your pillow can also boost the relaxing aromas and can make jumping into a cloud of pillows and blankets feel extra luxurious.

YL tip: Did you know that Valerian essential oil helps promote feelings of calm, serenity, relaxation, and that it can ease occasional restlessness? Add Valerian to your bedtime routine by diffusing a few drops 30 minutes before you go to sleep.

So long, stink: DIY shoe odor eliminators

May 15th, 2019 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Instructions

1. Add witch hazel and water to the spray bottle. Remember to leave room at the top so that you can add the essential oils. You may not need a full ounce of water.

2. Add 30-40 drops of essential oil. (See our recommendations below.)

3. Put the spray top on and shake well to mix. Add more oil if you want a stronger scent.

How to use

Shake well before each use. Spray the insides of your shoes enough to make them slightly damp, but not enough to soak them. Let the shoes sit for at least 12 hours before wearing them again to ensure that they are completely dry.

YL tip: Mix and match any of our recommended essential oils to suit your sense of smell! This is the recipe we used:

11 drops Purification®

11 drops Eucalyptus Radiata

10 drops Peppermint

5 drops Lemon
