10 legit uses for essential oils (that sound fake)

Nov 19th, 2018 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Did you know essential oils can give you a fresh pillowcase, a sparkling clean microwave, and smooth skin? It’s true—they’re great in these ways and more! Packed with numerous benefits, essential oils have untapped potential in every bottle. Check out these totally legit uses.

1. Steam-clean your microwave. Mix 4 drops of Lemon essential oil and 2 cups of water in a microwave-safe bowl. Then place the bowl in the microwave, and microwave it on high for 3 minutes. The steam from the water can help you remove buildup, so you can wipe your microwave clean in a snap. Your microwave will smell extra fresh too! Use caution when removing the hot bowl.

2. Minimize the appearance of wrinkles. Embrace a more youthful appearance by incorporating 2-4 drops of Helichrysum into your skin care routine. You can also add 2-4 drops of Frankincense essential oil to your moisturizer to reduce the appearance of an uneven skin tone!

3. Purify the air. Diffuse Kunzea essential oil or our Purification® blend to eliminate unwanted odors.

4. Soak in a relaxing bath. Put a few drops of Lavender essential oil in your evening bath to unwind after a busy day.

5. Craft your own wood cleaner. Mix 1 capful of Thieves® Household Cleaner with 1 cup of olive oil in a spray bottle. Spray onto a microfiber cloth and polish cabinets, tables, and other wood furniture. Remember to do a spot test first.

6. Refresh musty laundry. When daily tasks pile up, it’s easy to forget to take the load of laundry out of the washer, which can result in stinky clothes. Keep Tea Tree or Lemon essential oil nearby to save the day. Add 2 drops of either oil to your detergent and run the washer again for fresh-scented garments.

7. Fill your home with your favorite scents. Put several drops of any essential oil on a cotton ball, and place it in your vacuum canister before you clean. The air moving through the vacuum will fill the space with a pleasant aroma. We recommend our Citrus Fresh™.

8. Keep blemishes at bay. Improve the appearance of your skin with Blue Tansy, Copaiba, Manuka, or Tea Tree! Add a few drops of one of these oils to your skin care routine for a fresh-looking face!

9. Enhance your hair products. Mix 2-3 drops of Spearmint or Rosemary essential oil with your shampoo and conditioner in your hand. Soothe your scalp and enjoy the tingling effects.

10. Create a fragrant home. Put 8-10 drops of a refreshing scent like Lemongrass on your furnace filter every time you change it. The air flow will circulate the aroma throughout your whole house!

5 secrets of Elemi essential oil

Nov 14th, 2018 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Elemi essential oil  occasionally flies under the radar, despite its cousins Frankincense and Myrrh grabbing a lot of attention. But don’t let that distract you—this resin family is a terrific trio, not just a dynamic duo. Get ready! Elemi is about to reveal all its secrets!

1. Origins

We’re proud that Young Living’s Elemi essential oil, produced from pili trees, comes from the Happy Pili Tree Farm located in the Bicol region of the Philippines. This partner farm’s commitment to protect natural resources and ensure long-term viability of high-quality Elemi oil makes it an obvious and welcome addition to the Young Living family.

The Happy Pili Tree Farm—filled with lush, green forests located on the banks of crystal blue water—is also dedicated to providing fair wages and community support. Their commitment is so immense, they built a distillery on-site so they could keep jobs and expertise within their own neighborhoods.

2. Sustainability

As lovers of essential oils, we’re invested in plants and products that cause no harm to our planet, and Elemi essential oil does just that. Elemi’s harvesting process is sustainable, so collecting the resin that this complex oil comes from won’t harm pili trees or the ecosystem.

The Happy Pili Tree Farm also exhibits expertise on how to legally and sustainably source this precious plant. As this partner farm works to protect this natural resource, they help to ensure long-term viability of Elemi essential oil.

3. Family

The pili tree, from which Elemi is harvested, is a member of the Burseraceae family, just like Frankincense and Myrrh. Diffuse the three resin-based oils together, and you’ll enjoy a rich aroma that’s hard to beat.

Just like its cousins, Elemi has a history of being used in ancient practices. Use Elemi essential oil during your moments of meditation and prayer or other spiritual rituals. Rub a drop into your palms, cup your hands over your nose, and inhale for a scent that helps to leave you feeling spiritually sound.

4. Beauty

The history books have spoken: Using Elemi oil is a tried and true way to support the appearance of healthy-looking skin. Incorporate this oil into your skin care routine for the moisture that artificial ingredients don’t deliver.

  • Add two drops to your ART® Creme Masque. Use this mask and EO combination at night and head to bed without rinsing it off. You’ll start to love morning when you see how soft your skin is!
  • For a little less moisture, add 3 drops of Elemi to your regular moisturizer once a day.

5. Uses

Diffuse it, apply it, you’ll love every way you use it! This fresh, lemony essential oil with balsamic undertones blends masterfully with citrus, spice, and floral oils. The sky’s the limit when it comes to Elemi-infused diffuser blends, but here’s one to get you started:

Elemi essential oil diffuser blend

For more ways to get Elemi essential oil benefits, we suggest you:

  • Put a few drops of Elemi into a bowl of hot water. Cover your head and the bowl with a towel. Breathe deeply, and let the heat, steam, and nature-inspiring aroma fill your senses for five relaxing minutes.
  • Dampen a washcloth with water and add 2-3 drops of Elemi. Use as a warm compress on the back of your neck or chest.
  • Make a muscle rub by combing 1 ounce of jojoba oil, 4 drops of Elemi, 3 drops of Mister™, and 2 drops of Eucalyptus Radiata. For an added cooling sensation, add 1-2 drops of Peppermint.

DIY garbage disposal fresheners

Nov 12th, 2018 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Ever wonder what that funky smell is coming from your kitchen sink? We’re not exactly sure what it is either, but we do have the solution—DIY garbage disposal fresheners!

This easy DIY takes less than an hour, including cleanup! It’s all natural and completely safe for the environment, and the fresheners will make your disposal smell as fresh and clean as a meadow of daisies!

Supplies:

1 cup baking soda

¾ cup liquid Castile soap

½ cup salt

30 drops essential oil

¼ cup water

Measuring spoon (we used a tablespoon)

Yield: approx. thirty 1-inch fresheners

Directions:

1. Combine baking soda and salt in a bowl.

2. Add Castile soap and essential oils. See our scent ideas below!

3. Add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the mixture reaches the texture of wet sand.

YL tip: If you add too much water, the mixture won’t pack together or dry properly. Add more baking soda and salt to get the texture of wet sand.

4. Pack the mixture into the measuring spoon.

YL tip: To get your freshener out of the measuring spoon, tap the spoon lightly on the counter until the contents slide out. Be careful! The mixture hasn’t dried yet, so it might be fragile.

5. Let the fresheners dry for about 24 hours.

6. Store in a sealed glass jar, and keep dry.

To use:

Put 1-3 fresheners in your garbage disposal. Turn the faucet on a steady cold stream, and run the disposal for up to one minute.

Four tips for keeping your garbage disposal fresh:

  • Run it often, even when there’s nothing in it, to keep all its parts moving.
  • Always use cold water—hot water can melt grease, which causes clogs.
  • Avoid putting certain things down there, like grease, bones, large fruit pits, and foods that expand when wet, like rice or pasta.
  • Grind small pieces of food thoroughly by running the disposal for longer than you think—a few seconds doesn’t cut it.

Snuggle up with Cinnamon Bark

Nov 7th, 2018 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Opening a bottle of Cinnamon Bark essential oil might be the best form of time travel we know. The warm aroma immediately transports you to a night sipping hot cider by the light of a bonfire or a bright Christmas morning, eating a cinnamon roll fresh from the oven.

We all have our own history that’s stirred up by the sweet scent of cinnamon, but this sought-after spice has an interesting story of its own—as well as uses that go far beyond baked goods!

Just in case the “bark” part of the name didn’t give it away, all cinnamon—not just our oil—comes from the bark of a tree! Cinnamon trees are in the genus Cinnamomum. Our Cinnamon Bark oil comes from Cinnamomun zeylanicum, a tropical evergreen native to Sri Lanka.

Here’s where Cinnamon Bark essential oil differs from the cinnamon sticks in your cider or ground cinnamon in your french toast. Cinnamon Bark oil is distilled from the outer bark of the cinnamon tree. The cinnamon you buy in the spice section at the grocery store is made from the inner bark, which is harvested in rolls and then dried out.

It’s no secret that cinnamon is delicious. Cinnamon Bark Vitality™ essential oil is labeled for internal use, so it’s just the thing to add to your favorite recipes!

Cinnamon Bark Vitality is stronger than the ground cinnamon you may be used to, so start with just a little bit of oil in your recipe. We recommend the toothpick method: Dip the end of a wooden toothpick into your bottle of oil, and then swirl the toothpick through your wet ingredients. Get more tips for cooking with essential oils here!

YL Tip

Try Cinnamon Bark Vitality in these recipes:

Cinnamon Bark is a “hot” oil, which means it causes a warming sensation on your skin. That’s important to remember when you use this oil topically, because you don’t want to ruin a should-be-cozy moment with a negative skin reaction! We recommend diluting Cinnamon Bark oil 1:1 with a carrier oil and doing a patch test before you dive in to topical use.

YL Tip

Here are some of our favorite topical Cinnamon Bark oil usage tips so that you can get the most out of its warming properties:

  • Mix three drops of Cinnamon Bark oil with some V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex, and use it for a warming foot massage. Then put on a pair of warm socks to keep your feet cozy and moisturized! We recommend completing the picture with a nice book, a cozy fireplace, and a warm mug of herbal tea—but we’ll leave those details up to you!
  • Treat yourself to a warming scalp massage with four drops of Cinnamon Bark and a dime-sized amount of your favorite hair-loving carrier oil. Our favorite for this use is coconut oil. Using your fingers, massage the sweetly scented blend into your scalp for several minutes. Then wash and dry your hair as usual.
  • Give tired muscles and joints some TLC—Treatment Laced with Cinnamon. Add a few drops of Cinnamon Bark oil to your favorite massage oil. Then relax and let the aroma wrap you up in comfort.

There’s a reason cinnamon is often an ingredient in potpourris and air fresheners. Skip the store-bought solutions and go straight to the source with Cinnamon Bark essential oil—or any of the Young Living blends it lends its spicy-sweet scent to, like Thieves® essential oil blend.

YL Tip

Refresh your home with these fresh-baked ideas:

  • Make a room spray by filling a spray bottle with 3 ounces of water and four drops of Thieves essential oil blend, which features Cinnamon Bark as a main ingredient.
  • Use Thieves Household Cleaner on everything from doorknobs to bathtubs. Read our blog post for tips on this amazing all-purpose cleaner.
  • Diffuse this cozy blend to get rid of musty odors and fill your home with an inviting fragrance.

Fall Frost diffuser blend

So whether you swirl Cinnamon Bark Vitality through hot cocoa, make a Cinnamon Bark foot rub part of your hygge time, or diffuse a cinnamony blend to make your house smell like a baker’s dream, you’re going to want this sweetly scented oil at your side all year long.

21 ways to reuse empty essential oil bottles

Oct 26th, 2018 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Essential oils are precious to the very end, but when the final drop makes its way out of the dropper, then what? If you’re an essential oil lover, chances are you’ve wondered what to do with the little amber bottles you have lying around. We’ve got 21 options to keep those bottles functional to the last drop of oil and beyond!

YL tip: Some of these ideas require a clean essential oil bottle. To clean your bottle, peel off the label as much as you can, remove the oil dropper and all parts of the cap, and place all the pieces in a bowl of warm water with half a capful of Thieves® Household Cleaner. Soak everything for 10 minutes, then use 1 drop of Lemon essential oil on a cotton ball to get rid of any sticky remains of the label.

1. Create your own DIY roll-on with your favorite essential oils and some V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex. Check out our post for some ideas to get started.

2. Infuse Epsom salt with the last few drops of oil in the bottle. Remove the lid and oil dropper from a mostly empty EO bottle. Put the bottle, dropper, and 1 cup of Epsom salt in a sealed container for at least 48 hours. Open it up and voilà: bath salts infused with a soothing aroma! Even better, you can add multiple bottles to a container of Epsom salt to get different infusions with stronger scents.

3. Make a centerpiece with one or two flowers in the bottles, turning them into little bud vases.

4. Jazz up your twinkly lights! Thoroughly clean your empty bottles, remove the oil dropper and all parts of the cap, and gently press the bottle over each bulb on a string of lights. These are a great additional to any holiday party.

5. Fill a bottle with your carrier oil of choice to have on the go.

6. Create a DIY face serum to add moisture to your skin care routine. Our top picks are Geranium, Tea Tree, and Rosemary. Store your new serum in an empty essential oil bottle.

7. Use the bottles to hold your toiletries for travel. Things like hair oil, face serum, and baby powder fit easily in a little EO bottle; plus, they’ll free up that much-needed space in your carry-on.

8. Try your hand at a DIY custom blend with the last few drops of your favorite oils. You’ll love creating a unique aroma to use in your diffuser, and you can store your creation in an empty oil bottle.

9. Infuse a cotton ball with remaining oil and use it as a multipurpose deodorizer. Stuff a cotton ball in the bottle, put the lid back on, and leave it for three days. Take the cotton ball out—use tweezers if necessary—and place it anywhere that could benefit from a refreshing scent: inside stinky shoes, at the bottom of a trash can, in a gym bag, and any other place that needs an aromatic makeover.

10. Share your most-used oil with a friend by putting some of it in a clean, empty bottle.

11. Put together an essential oil travel kit by putting smaller amounts of the oils you use most—plus some of our recommendations—in empty 5-ml bottles. Put the collection in a cosmetic bag so it’s ready to go when you are.

12. Take your empty bottles to a local glass recycler.

13. Refresh your drawers or closets by removing the lid of a nearly empty bottle and letting the aroma permeate the space. Make sure to position the bottle where it won’t tip—you wouldn’t want to spill anything on your favorite sweater!

14. Make an all-natural perfume or cologne. Store your signature scent in a clean, empty bottle.

15. Use the last of the oil to make a mattress refresher. Instead of cleaning out the bottle, fill it ¾ full with baking soda. Allow it to sit overnight for the baking soda to absorb the oil fully. Sprinkle the mixture over your mattress and let it sit for an hour; then vacuum up the baking soda and breathe in the freshness!

16. Make smelling salts for when you want a fresh fragrance around. Fill a clean, empty bottle with Epsom salt, add 4 drops of a refreshing scent—we love Spearmint—and shake well. Open the cap and inhale whenever you need a whiff of something fresh.

17. Dilute your go-to oils for use with kids. See our handy guide for diluting oils for use with children and babies.

18. Divide oils into two bottles. Keep the regular top on one bottle and add a roller top to the other, so you can easily use your favorite oil in multiple ways.

19. Make your own flavored toothpicks with the remainder of your Vitality™ oils. Cinnamon Bark Vitality, Peppermint Vitality, and even Citrus Fresh™ Vitality make yummy toothpicks. Just place plain toothpicks in the last few drops of oil at the bottom of the bottle and let them sit for a day or two. Ta-da: tasty post-meal toothpicks!

20. Freshen your breath with a DIY breath spray. Using the last 6 drops of your Vitality oils, fill the bottle to the top with distilled water and add a spray top.

21. Flavor your own sea salt with the last little bit of Vitality oil in the bottle. Wait until you can’t get any more drops out of the bottle, but it still has a strong aroma. Fill the bottle with plain sea salt, seal, and wait at least two days before using.

Why essential oils make the best air fresheners

Oct 24th, 2018 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

There’s a reason people say, “stop and smell the roses,” not “stop and smell the synthetic compounds that were formulated to smell like a rose.” Why settle for a synthetic substitute when you can have the real thing? It’s time to ditch commercial air fresheners and enjoy the fresh scents of nature!

There are a lot of reasons to avoid commercial air fresheners. Many contain phthalates, which is a group of chemicals that may affect human reproduction and development according the U.S. National Library of Medicine.* In an independent test, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) found phthalates in many commercial air fresheners, including some that did not list phthalates on the ingredients, as well as some that were labeled as “all natural” or “unscented.”** Yikes!

So let’s ditch the mystery musk and create some DIY air fresheners using the real thing—essential oils, distilled straight from nature.

No one wants their car to smell like gym shoes and yesterday’s lunch. But when it comes to freshening your chariot, just say no to tree-shaped air fresheners hanging from your rearview mirror. Instead, create a natural air freshener with a few drops of oil!

Snag one of Young Living’s new Car Vent Diffusers, which use the air flow from your vents to diffuse essential oils—no water, plug, or cord required! The easily adjustable design fits any car vent, and the cotton pads are reusable!

Here are some of our favorite air freshener recipes for the car:
